The Million Dollar Question: Should You Work for a Startup or an MNC?

Today’s work environment is dominated by the growth of startups, but traditional multinational corporations (MNCs) continue to attract a wide range of applicants. Both provide a wide range of differing benefits. The question freshers are left with is then, should I work for an MNC or a startup? Well, let’s break it down first to actually understand the benefits of working in MNCs as compared to working in a startup. 

To start off, the nature of a startup itself is dynamic. That means you need to not only expect a great deal of flexibility in your role, but also embrace it. Tasks are not compartmentalized, job descriptions are not formalized or structured – expect chaos. Nevertheless, if you’re the type of person that thrives on uncertainty and constant change, you’ll fit right in at a startup. As a result of this atmosphere, there is also a lack of hierarchy in startups. You’re less constrained by stringent rules and policies. All of a sudden, you can now walk up to the CEO in your casual denim jeans and strike up a conversation about pretty much anything. Moreover, don’t expect a lot of repetitive tasks in your daily work routine. Startups require a flexible nature that enables you to excel in a range of tasks; you can become an all-rounder due to the steepness of the learning curve. Furthermore, the work culture and ethics at a startup is different in comparison to that of an MNC; you’re more likely to be surrounded by ambitious and entrepreneurial minds who share a similar vision. However, employees tend to get overly engaged with their work at a startup, making it difficult to maintain an ideal work-life balance. Working hours might end up being longer because you become personally invested in your work. 

On a contrasting note, the work environment at a multinational corporation (MNC) is more structured and stable. Employees have a well defined role, and make use of established structures and processes to guide their behavior. This comes with the existence of a hierarchy, which means it’s usually difficult for lower-level employees to communicate with those at the top without going through intermediaries first. This will be complemented by professional working relationships, and more often than not, a formal dress code. As a result of the stability in your job portfolio, you can expect the workload to be less stressful and chaotic, allowing you to actually maintain a suitable work-life balance. You may also notice the physical working environment at an MNC to be well-equipped with canteens, libraries and recreational facilities that you can freely make use of as an employee. 

At the end of the day, the answer to this question really boils down to what your personal preferences are. Whether you prefer a routine, stable job with established procedures and formal environment or a flexible, dynamic job with a great deal of freedom – it depends on your preferences. At a startup, one can benefit from being surrounded by passionate and driven individuals and the freedom to work towards personal excellence. Employees at MNCs, on the other hand, enjoy stability, relatively good job security, and a more manageable level of stress. Both options provide two completely contrasting experiences, but at the end of the day it’s up to you to decide what suits you best
